Hunting 101

Have you been thinking about going deer hunting and want to take the next step?   Would you like to learn how to field dress and process a deer?  Are you interested in providing "local grass feed meat" for you and your family?  Not sure what caliber rifle would be best for you?  Do you want to learn how to prepare a variety of savory venison meals?  Then Rounton Farm's Hunting 101 class is the answer.

This one day course will take you step by step through the deer hunting process.  It will cover a wide variety of topics including but not limited to:

  • learning proper hunter safety
  • getting experience firing a variety of hunting rifles
  • going into the woods and finding deer trails, bedding areas, scrapes and rubs
  • practicing your aim on the shooting range
  • discussing the necessary gear needed
  • putting up a variety of tree stands and hunting blinds
  • experiencing field dressing and processing a deer (when one is available)
  • enjoying tasty venison meals

This class is catered to your level or experience and you will be actively involved in the learning process. It is the ultimate in “eating locally” and simply a true and real experience in hunting safety, ethics, processing, and enjoying venison.

Lead Instructor: Rob Pitera - Rob has been an elementary school educator for over 20 years and his interest in hunting developed later in life. It was difficult for him to find someone to "show him the ropes" and after a couple of months of frustration in the woods, he found a college friend to teach him the necessary skills. Over the past 15 years, Rob has been honing his skills and has developed the hunting 101 course with a few specific goals in mind:

  • create an ethics based, practical, hands on, and stress free learning environment
  • provide an opportunity to fire a variety of rifles inorder to make an informed decision at the gun shop
  • teach how to spot signs of deer in the woods to increase hunting sucess
  • demonstrate how to properly field dress a deer to maximize the quality of the venison
  • prepare venison in a variety of ways
